On the Town – Cocktails in Denver
Whenever we go to a new city, we always check out the cocktail and food scene. Each city has its own flair, bringing in local traditions and ingredients. Some cities are on the forefront of craft cocktails, others are still finding their way. The same with food. Obviously, cities like New York and Chicago are well in front of the pack. But we were excited to see what the Denver scene had to offer us in terms of cocktails.
A good evening on the town starts with a good pre-dinner cocktail. We did some research before departing our hotel and found that a Denver cocktail bar had made a few ‘best of’ lists on both a local and national scale. The Green Russell was going to be our first stop!
Located in Denver’s historic Larimer Square which houses a number of the city’s well-known restaurants and bars, we made our way there on foot to soak up some of the Denver vibe. Google Maps in hand, we followed our navigation and found ourselves right in the middle of the action. A bit hidden, we walked by The Green Russell twice, while questioning if our phone’s navigation knew where we were! Hidden down a staircase, tucked into a shopping alcove, we finally spotted the sign and headed down the stairs. As we walked in, we again questioned our location as it appeared we ventured back in time to a 50’s diner. But never to turn our back on the possibility of a good cocktail – we asked to be seated in one of the 50’s booths, most likely decked out with its own jukebox. Thankfully, the hostess knew by the looks on our faces that we weren’t interested in milk shakes, and lead us through the nondescript stainless steel door that held a little slice of cocktail heaven on the other side.
That’s what we were looking for! An underground, dark space, with the bustle of great conversation accompanied by great cocktails.
The Green Russell specializes in craft cocktails featuring their house made and aged assortment of bitters. Two wonderful cocktails were ordered and the bartender proceeded to craft our first cocktail of the night with the care and attention to detail that is just as important in a cocktail as the right spirits.
We would’ve loved to stay for another round and soak up the speakeasy vibe, but dinner reservations had us back on the road. Till next time. . .Cheers!
